In 2011 my monthly arrowhead newsletter published several photographs of display frames from a massive artifact collection assembled from over twenty "Old Time" collections across the Pacific Northwest and Great Basin regions.

In early 2022 the owner of this same collection asked me to help him put together a book to catalog his collection of over 100 artifact frames. It was my great honor to assist him and produce this book and make it available to collectors and artifact enthusiasts. Matching "gunther barbed" jasper arrow points



Two tan and red jasper "Gunther Barbed" arrow points found in an apparent cache in Siskiyou County in northern California by Pat Welch in 1970. The larger one measures 1.5" long by 0.75" wide. It was evaluated as a "Grade 10" example in its Certificate of Authenticity by Tom Davis in 2009. The smaller arrowhead measures 1.3125" long by 0.625" wide. "Gunther Barbed" arrow points were in use from the Developmental Phase to the Historic Phase, 1000 - 200 B.P. (Before Present, counting backward from 1950).

These flint, chert and chalcedony "Caracara" arrow points were found in south Texas, north of the Rio Grande River around Laredo, in Webb County. Originally ex-Don Kaye Bruce Collection, ex-Jim Bennett, ex-Chris Oswald. Mississippian Period to Historic Period, 600 - 400 B.P. Left: 1.3125" long by 0.6875" wide. Middle: 1.0625" long by 0.5" wide. Right: 1.3125" long by 0.6875" long.

The Premiere Edition of "The Arrowhead COLLECTIVE" e-magazine featured an up-close look at an extensive cache of arrow points found near Spiro, Oklahoma, in the far northeastern corner of the state, near Arkansas. They are all made in the "Nodena" style: an un-notched, narrow, thin, needle-sharp tipped, elliptically-shaped blade with a rounded to pointed base, chipped with excellent parallel oblique pressure flaking. "Nodena" style arrow points were used by the Quapaw Indians from the Mississippian Period to the Historic Period, 600 - 400 B.P. The cache was a "tribute offering" excavated at Spiro Mound in Leflore County, Oklahoma, in the 1930's. It was in Dr. Robert E. Bell Collection and in the Carl Englender Collection. The arrow points are made from several different types of stone, all proper for the type area: Pitkin, Reed Springs, Penters, and Fort Payne chert. Sizes range from 1-1/4" to 2-3/8" in length.



"gunther barbed" ~ "Shasta variety" arrowhead



This transparent black obsidian "Gunther Barbed" ~ "Shasta Variety" arrow point was found by Brad Sharp in 1963 - 1964 in a cache of 28 well-preserved points recovered at a "Wintun" camp on the McCloud River arm of Shasta Lake in northern California. All were undamaged and unused. For reference, this arrowhead measures 1.625" long by 0.9375" wide. "Gunther Barbed" arrow points come in several regional variations. They were in use in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest regions from the Developmental Phase to the Historic Phase, 1000 - 200 B.P.
